Caught a friend on Cash Cab

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

We don’t let Niko watch a lot of tv, but his two favorite shows are Cash Cab and Deadliest Catch. Today we turned on Cash Cab just in time to see a friend of ours from b-school (w/ three other ppl) miss the last strike and get booted out of the cab with nothing.

Apparently those seven years at Cornell really paid off for him…

Deep mysteries of the universe

Friday, January 18th, 2008

Have you ever watched a foreign movie with both english dubbed dialogue and english subtitles? It’s as if they try to make the dialogue and the subtitles different. Some of our favorite examples from The Host:

Dialogue: Am I fucking blind?

Subtitles: You really didn’t see it?

Dialogue: You are dimwits right to the end.

Subtitles: Morons, to the very end.

Dialogue: I’ll see you in hell

Subtitles: Have a good life

Best movie of 2007: Superbad

Monday, December 10th, 2007

If I were king, and the Oscars were called the Sams, Superbad would win best picture of the year.

Rescue Dawn and Werner Herzog

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

We just Netflixed Rescue Dawn, a Werner Herzog movie about a Vietnam-era navy pilot who escapes from a Laotian prison.

Werner Herzog movies are growing on me. He’s sort of obsessed with obsession… Rescue Dawn is about a man obsessed with survival; the last Herzog movies we saw were Grizzly Man (man obsessed with… grizzlies) and The White Diamond (man obsessed with building a quiet, small blimp for observing the rainforest canopy). All recommended.

Flight of the Conchords

Wednesday, November 7th, 2007

We just got Flight of the Conchords Season 1 on netflix, and it is the funniest show I’ve ever seen. It’s about two musicians from New Zealand trying to get by in New York. They have these great musical fantasy sequences where they sing about a girl being the “most beautiful girl in the room, and if she was on the street possibly in the top three on the street, depending on the street.”

Spider-Man 3 sucks

Watched Spider-Man 3 from netflix this week. Waste. Of. Time. Worst Kirsten Dunst movie ever.

In praise of Sneakers (1992)

Friday, July 7th, 2006

I always like movies about business (The Secret of My Succes, anyone?), especially the business of technology. They’re fun to critique and most have a couple of very serious falsehoods.

But my favorite in the genre has to be Sneakers, with Robert Redford. First, it’s about crypto, which is cool. Second, it has espionage and intrigue and spies and all that crap. Robert Redford is the good guy. And last but not least, it’s a total liberal fantasy like West Wing. At the end, the RNC goes bankrupt and Greenpeace is flush with cash. What’s not to like about that.

Domino’s Pizza Sucks

Tuesday, December 27th, 2005

This is why we’re not going to eat their pizza (other than quality)… the founder of Domino’s is Thomas Monaghan, who also started the Thomas Moore Law Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The Thomas Moore Center calls itself the “sword and shield for people of faith”; it has defended various pro-life groups and supports the “Intelligent Design” “movement.”

I have no doubt that Thomas Monaghan still owns shares of Domino’s, which means that of every pizza you buy from them, some (admittedly small) portion of the profit will support ID… Personally, I would prefer that our money goes towards the FSM pirate ship.
