Around the world in 240 days

Around the world in 240 days – free.”

Ten UW students are chosen every year for an all-expenses-paid trip around the globe. They don’t have to attend classes overseas. Nor do they have to write a report or give a speech when they return. All they have to do is enjoy.

“I almost cried when I found out,” Lee said of winning the fellowship. “It’s a wonderful chance of a lifetime.”

UW alumnus and investment adviser David Bonderman established the fellowship that bears his name.

In praise of Sneakers (1992)

I always like movies about business (The Secret of My Succes, anyone?), especially the business of technology. They’re fun to critique and most have a couple of very serious falsehoods.

But my favorite in the genre has to be Sneakers, with Robert Redford. First, it’s about crypto, which is cool. Second, it has espionage and intrigue and spies and all that crap. Robert Redford is the good guy. And last but not least, it’s a total liberal fantasy like West Wing. At the end, the RNC goes bankrupt and Greenpeace is flush with cash. What’s not to like about that.
