Canadian quarters suck
Sometimes when you buy a roll of quarters here, you'll get one or two Canadian quarters in the roll. They're about the same size and if you don't look closely you might mistake one for a US quarter.
But the laundry machines won't take them! And the bank won't take them back without their 30%+ exchange.

Monster.com et. all feature request
Am I the only one to wish that job search engines included "years of experience" as a search term? Seems like that would save all parties hours of time.

Star Wars
Somehow we made it to Star Wars at 9 am this morning. It may have been the last free movie we'll be able to see on Breean's pass.
I thought it was a lot of fun and great to see the backstory behind the original Star Wars. And you've gotta like the not-so-subtle political references.

John Thomas Steakhouse
We had dinner at John Thomas Steakhouse last night to celebrate Breean's last day at work and my graduation. I remain convinced that whenever you order a steak "medium well" all the cooks and waiters will look down on you and spit in your baked potato. Breean ordered hers just "medium", and it was so delicious it may have converted me.
This restaurant also has John Thomas Poker, where each diner chooses a playing card before the meal. If you get a straight, you win free entrees for two. With only two people a straight was clearly out of the question, but on our second try - yes, the waitress gave us a second chance - we pulled out a pair of threes. Free dessert!!
It was a wonderful dinner and a great start to a week-long celebration and culinary adventure, though fortunately much of the remainder will be on someone else's dime. I hope, anyway.

Brain candy
From The New Yorker, news that video games (and pop culture generally) just might make us smarter, not dumber. A book review by Malcolm Gladwell, Is pop culture dumbing us down or smartening us up?
Breean and I have been in a long-standing "discussion" over whether or not our kids will be allowed to play video games at home. It's one of the few topics we always find fun to "discuss."

The San Diego Rule
Ithaca has finally warmed up, to the point that the San Diego rule is now in effect: "Unless it rains, or a job requires, flip flops will be worn at all times."

Two short movie reviews
We saw Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy at the theater yesterday afternoon. Breean's job ends soon so we are determined to see as many free movies as possible while we are still able. This was a great choice for a lazy afternoon and a fun movie. The effervescent Zooey Deschanel does not dissapoint.
Then last night we finally Netflixed House of Flying Daggers. I enjoyed it but found it slow at times and the fight scenes were not terribly impressive.

Ugly Children May Get Parental Short Shrift: "Parents would certainly deny it, but Canadian researchers have made a startling assertion: parents take better care of pretty children than they do ugly ones."
