My #1 goal in life
My #1 goal in life is to gain wealth and recognition for something other than the Simpsons paper I wrote as an undergrad. [see below]

Mr. Tingleff:I am a college
Mr. Tingleff:
I am a college student giving a speech on The Simpsons' influence on American culture and I would like to use some of the information in your article posted on "The Simpson's Archive" website. First, let me state that I enjoyed your article, as it was a very nice critique of the show's influences. Second, I was wondering about your connection to the Simpsons. Are you just a devoted fan who wrote an artice, or do you have a job such as a journalist and wrote the story for a specific purpose? I feel I should point out that during my speech, if I decide to use any information from your article, you will recieve full credibility as it is required for the assignment. Any information you could give me on this topic would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.Sincerely,
<name removed>

One day, in a line
One day, in a line at the company cafeteria, Jack says to Mike behind him, "My elbow hurts like hell. I guess I better see a doctor." "Listen, you don't have to spend that kind of money," Mike replies..." [ read more ]

Send me a summary if you read this!
Long article on nytimes.com about the disappearing middle class. I'm hoping to find time to read it eventually.

Sucks to come back to work
On Salon.com: "The dot-com bubble was tough for cartoonist Scott Adams. But now that things suck again, it's boom time once more for disillusioned cubicle droids..." It's Wallyworld all over again:
But once you start noticing that your historians are making stuff up and your figure-skating judges are rigging their events, and your priests are dating children and having better sex lives than rock stars, that's what I call a bubble. That's the cab driver giving you stock tips.
I think that we're in this gigantic, unprecedented bubble of weaselness.
It's always tough coming back from vacation...

Breean and I are having a great time in NYC. I want to move out here - it's clearly the center of the Western world. [Central Park below]
Got off the subway at the Astor Place stop. I knew the Astor family is famous for having money but never knew why. New York real estate, as it turns out. John Jacob Astor (1763-1848) happens to be from Waldorf, Germany (home of SAP AG). That would explain the Waldorf-Astoria.

I'm looking for final comments
I'm looking for final comments on the resume I'll use for grad school applications. Read it and tell me what you think. Am I missing something? Am I lying too much? Comments to sam at tingleff dot com.
Thanks as always.

Dude, where's my job?
Depressing article at Fortune.com about un(der)employed Gen Xers.
No generation since the Depression has been set up for failure like this. Everything the dot-com boom delivered has been taken away--and then some. Real wages are falling, wealth continues to shift from younger to older, and education costs are surging. Worse yet, for some Gen Xers, their peak earning years are behind them.

Giants 3, Braves 1. Go Giants!
I'm in Denver for the night and am flying to St. Louis tomorrow evening. These road shows are tough stuff. By the second day you're tired of listening to yourself and your colleagues talk. I'm going to need the vacation next week.

I saw on the news
I saw on the news tonight that Iraq President Saddam Hussein challenged Bush to a deal. "Why risk the lives of all those Americans and Iraqis?," he said. Good idea.
Update: it was an Iraqi VP, not Hussein.

I'm in Frankfurt for the night and I'll fly back to SFO tomorrow afternoon. The Marriott here has high-speed ethernet in every room - too cool. I can't wait to come home though.
I feel underdressed everywhere I go in Germany. 'Business casual' at the European Tech Ed seemed to mean a three-piece suit. You could spot all the Americans by their short-sleeve polo shirts and jeans. Today is a holiday (Reunification Day) but I'm the only one walking around in a sweatshirt.
